The EAT-Lancet Commission Report on Healthy Diets has caused a lot of discussion and debate in the food space, and we’re digging in to find out answers to questions some advocates have raised. They based their model on the lowest-cost diet that conformed to the recommendations made in the report and found that following the EAT-Lancet diet would cost a median of $2.84 per day globally. It was also about 60 percent more expensive than a diet that met minimum nutritional requirements, largely because it includes high-cost meat and dairy. A new report released on January 16, 2019 by the EAT-Lancet Commission on Food, Planet and Health sets out what it calls a “healthy and sustainable diet” for the whole world. Vegetables come in at number ten on the list of recommended food groups in the EAT Lancet report, just before chicken and palm oil but after tree nuts (6.0%), peanuts (5.7%), sweeteners (4.8%) and soy foods (4.5%)!
